For the first time an extensive population genetics analysis based on historical samples of polar bear was done. The sample collection of ZIN RAS was catalogized and presented as an open access online resource. We also analyzed population structure of polar bear in Russian Arctic regions in historical context. No significant population differentiation based on geographical region was observed among historical populations, however, we have observed high genetic variation within populations and little differentiation between geographical regions.
