It is generally accepted that the human microflora plays an important role in maintaining the health of the host, participating in a wide range of metabolic functions and in the normal functioning of the immune system. To date, few studies have examined the bacterial community of the gastric mucosa other than H. pylori, which may play an important role in upper gastrointestinal diseases. When studying the microbiota of the stomach, a biopsy sample is usually taken from the antrum, however, the microbial composition of different parts of the stomach can vary significantly. The aim of this study was to characterize the gastric mucosal microbiota in biopsy samples from the gastric antrum and corpus using metatranscriptome sequencing. This method allowed us to characterize the metabolically active part of the microbiota.
