The aim of study was evaluating effect of autophagy inducer  -trehalose -  on autophagy  in different organs - liver, heart and brain and intracellular lipids storage. According to morphometric electron microscopic study trehalose consumption decreased body weight of db/db mice with obesity compared with controls (C57BL/6 mice) and db/db mice (drinking plain water),whereas trehalose drinking decreased also serum glucose level, glycated  hemoglobin. In hepatocytes of db/db mice compared to the control (C57BL/6 mice) there was higher content of large lipid inclusions and convoluted annular mitochondria; increased lipids were registered in heart and brain cells, autolysosomes were shown with lipid inclusions. Autophagy activation by trehalose had positive effects in db/db mice via possibly increased lipohagy. This effect seems to be promising for prevention of  serious diabetes complications (heart and brain damage), and therapy of disease.
